Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Don’t Let the Nerfs Ruin Your Start POECurrency.com’s Top Picks

Following the release of PoE 2 Patch 0.5.0 patch notes, the community discussed several mechanic adjustments. Shotgunning of Shield Wall skill was corrected, Poison damage was weakened, and Energy Generation logic of some Triggered Skills changed.

However, this doesn’t mean that choices during the early game have become narrower. POECurrency.com’s findings show that Patch 0.5.0’s higher Armor values and newly added Support Gems breathe new life into certain builds.

For early game progression, the core criterion for a reliable build is not necessarily the highest base damage, but rather the ability to reliably complete the story and enter Atlas Map under conditions of limited gear and resources.

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 Don't Let the Nerfs Ruin Your Start POECurrency's Top Picks

Armor Stacking Monk Build

Monk has long been considered defensively weak in early game due to the default dodge base struggling against physical damage. According to POECurrency.com’s testing, Armour reduction remains stable in Patch 0.5.0, making Armour the primary survival tool for this build.

The build uses Falling Thunder and Storm Wave as its main damage sources. Among all Monk leveling skills, few match the efficiency of Storm Wave, thanks to its smooth area coverage and consistent damage scaling. Ice Strike, despite its quality bonus, is less effective for map clearing due to its single-target mechanism.

This build focuses on equipping Armour-heavy gear early to withstand physical hits. As progression continues, it can transition into an Armour + Evasion hybrid setup, eventually incorporating Hollow Palm Technique.

A high-Armour shield found early on opens the door to a Shield Block variant. This build suits players who are comfortable managing defensive affixes. It requires minimal POE 2 currency investment – just a few Chaos Orbs to get started.

Grenade Ballista Totem Warbringer Build

Warbringer Ascendancy has a high minimum strength. The key advantages of Grenade Ballista Totems: they tank aggro for you, and they shrug off the majority of ground effects and curses.

Use Grenade Ballista in conjunction with Explosive Grenade. Totem builds are largely unaffected by the shotgun changes in Patch 0.5.0, since their damage relies on attack speed and area coverage from the totems themselves, not on multiple projectile overlap.

POECurrency.com has been verified through actual testing that Crossbow + Explosive Grenade can be used as a transitional build from Act 1 until Totem core gem is unlocked. This build does not rely heavily on weapon stats; focus instead on increasing totem placement speed and totem life.

Maps: In the early game, only 4-links are needed to reliably clear T1 maps. Armour buffs indirectly improve Warbringer’s survivability.

While you’re struggling to link your first 4-link, others are already farming juiced maps. To give yourself the same head start, you can buy PoE 2 currency from POECurrency.com now, skip the RNG, and secure your place ahead of the curve.

Every hour you waste farming for orbs is an hour someone else spends in red maps. POECurrency.com delivers cheap, safe PoE 2 currency instantly – but early league stock runs out quickly. Don’t get left behind.

Supporting Fire Tactician Build

This build is centered around Supporting Fire, with logic similar to Minion, but relies on Strength stacking. Damage scales with Strength (1% per point), while Area of Effect increases with Intelligence (1% per 3 points). The build also gains bonuses from minion damage nodes.

POECurrency.com recommends players use Crossbow + Explosive Grenade from levels 1-6; switch to Skeletal Sniper from levels 6-22; and officially switch to Supporting Fire after level 22, entering automatic map clearing mode. Patch 0.5.0 added jewels like Split Personality, providing more ways to stack Strength.

Prioritize gear with a Strength + summon damage base. Use Armour base for the chest and helmet. In the mid-to-late game, at least 500 Strength is needed to achieve a comfortable map clearing speed.

The biggest risk is that Skeletal might be quickly killed before level 22; it’s recommended to carry POE 2 Minion Life Support Gems. This build is one of the few that yields a net benefit.

Fire Bear Smith of Kitava Build

The core of this build is Fire Bear form combined with Smith of Kitava Ascendancy. Damage comes from fire spells and elemental overload triggered by melee attacks.

Comet damage was nerfed in Patch 0.5.0, but this has limited impact on this build because the main output isn’t from Comet, but from fire spell chains triggered by Ancestral Cry.

The patch fixed an energy generation bug, but may prevent Ancestral Cry from triggering Cast on Hit. If confirmed, it will switch to pure melee fire damage, relying on Fury of the King Ashbark Talisman ring to maintain output.

The price of this ring is high in the first two days of progression; two Topaz Rings can be used in conjunction with Fire Damage as a temporary solution. After 48 hours of progression, the price usually drops to an acceptable level.

Expect to track several damage-boosting effects with this build; the payoff is the ability to clear entire screens while moving quickly.

Shield Wall Titan Build

Shield Wall Titan was one of the highest-performing melee builds prior to Patch 0.5.0. The patch modified shotgunning behaviour, which some expected to weaken Shield Wall significantly. However, the actual effect on this specific build is limited.

Shield Wall’s primary damage mechanism does not involve multiple projectiles hitting the same target. Instead, damage derives from reflected damage converted from the shield’s Armour value, which also interacts with knockback effects.

The shotguning adjustments mainly affect builds that rely on multi‑projectile support gems. Standard Shield Wall configurations rarely use such supports. At the same time, Patch 0.5.0 increases total Armour by approximately 15% by level 80. Since both the offensive and defensive aspects of this build scale with Armour, the Armour increase provides partial compensation for any minor losses.

In a solo self‑found (SSF) environment, a Shield Wall Titan can clear tier 1 maps using a shield with only 200 Armour. The entire campaign can be completed with gear obtained solely from drops, without trading or using the Crafting Bench.

A later upgrade path includes the Nightfall shield, where Armour Break and Herald of Ice together produce chain freeze explosions on enemy packs. A pure physical bleed variant also remains functional; it focuses on stacking shield Armour and increasing knockback probability.

For a reliable league start in POE 2 Patch 0.5.0, any of these five builds will serve you well. Choosing a build that suits your playstyle is more crucial than chasing the theoretically highest damage.
